Environmental Objectives:

Our environmental objective is to through recycling in Ireland help begin to tackle the underlying environmental issues that cause additional problems for both Ireland and the world. In Ireland alone, it is estimated that 2 million mobile phones will be replaced this year, accounting for 2,000 tons of waste. Kavanagh Environmental works to keep mobile phones out of landfills and through its innovative recycling mobile phones programs collects more than 10,000 mobile phones every month.

Kavanagh Environmental are the leading Mobile Phone and other small electronic device recycling company in Ireland.  The primary driver has been the introduction of the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive 2002/96/EC. We operate under a “Waste Permit” (WFP-DS-08-0003-01) issued by South Dublin County Council www.sdcc.ie.

Kavanagh Environmental are also members of both WEEE Ireland www.weeeireland.ie (Ref No: KAV100) and the WEEE Register Society www.weeeregister.ie (Reg No IE 01083 WB).

WEEE Legislation:

waste hierarchyThe WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC is an EU Directive founded on the principle of "Producer Responsibility" and its general objectives are:

  • to prevent waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and to promote the reuse, recycling and recovery of such wastes
  • to improve the environmental performance of all operators involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment, e.g. producers, distributors and consumers and in particular those operators directly involved in the treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Using the WEEE directive guidelines and the waste hierarchy pyramid Kavanagh Environmental has set itself the following targets for the phones and accessories received:
