Superquinn urges customers to recycle mobile phones for Barretstown

Superquinn - BarrestownSuperquinn today launched a two week appeal urging consumers to recycle their old mobile phones in aid of Barretstown, the retailer’s charity of choice. For every phone recycled at least €3 is donated to Barretstown by Kavanagh Environmental, the company which recovers and recycles the phones. Barretstown aims to recycle 100,000 phones raising at least €300,000 and Superquinn customers are urged to help them reach their goal.

Special Barretstown branded bags are available in all Superquinn stores at the checkout area from Monday 9th to Sunday 22nd February, and will also be enclosed with online shopping customers’ deliveries. Consumers simply put their old phones into the bag and freepost the sealed bag back to Kavanagh Environmental. Up to six phones can fit into each bag.

James Wilson, Trading Director at Superquinn, comments, “At Superquinn we’re very proud to support Barretstown and the excellent work that they do in helping children with serious illnesses. We have already raised over €150,000 to date through various fundraising initiatives and corporate donations, but our goal is to raise €1 million by Autumn 2011.”

“This new mobile phone recycling initiative is a really easy way for consumers to make a big difference to the lives of the children who attend Barretstown’s medically endorsed camps throughout the year. Simply by donating their old mobile phones using one of the special recycling bags provided in our stores, at least €3 from each phone will go to Barretstown. We’re encouraging everyone to do a spring clean, dig out those old phones, and get involved in raising money for a very deserving cause.”

Not only does donating a mobile phone raise money for Barretstown, it also reduces the amount of waste going into landfill. 100,000 mobile phones is equivalent to 15 tonnes of electronic waste.
